The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP), and the Virginia School-Age Child Care Association (VSACCA) invite you to attend a special workshop Collaboration Strategies for Principals and After-School Program Directors on Saturday, October 27 at the Marriott Newport News at City Center.
In this session, Principals, school leaders and after-school program directors will engage in activities and discussions to provide a deeper understanding of their work and of the opportunities that are possible with greater collaboration.
Based on the NAESP guidebook Leading After-School Learning Communities – What Principals Should Know and Be Able to Do, the workshop will be led by a Newport News team of Patricia M. Tilghman, Principal, Sedgefield Elementary School and Crystal Tragesser, Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor.
“In many cases, schools and after-school programs operate quite independently, yet there are many opportunities for each to support their individual and collective goals. For principals, a greater understanding of the roles and functions for after-school programming can further their ability to support student achievement in an expanded learning day. For after-school directors, a close working relationship with principals can provide insights into the school day that enhance their ability to support student learning and address unique challenges and goals.”
Workshop activities are designed to encourage a high level of participant involvement and interaction and to provide tools and strategies for ongoing communication and planning. These activities are included in the guide, so that participants may return to the community and conduct their own workshops.
This workshop is part of the 14th Annual Virginia School-Age Child Care Association Conference. Principals and school leaders are invited to attend the Conference or this special session. Registration for the full conference (Friday and Saturday) would include the opportunity to participate in other workshops on:
- 21st Century funding
- character education
- science programs for middle schools
- literacy
- a presentation from the National School Boards Association on working with your school board
